Thankful Turkey Craft

As you read this, I'm two days into the Holiday Boutique at the Overland Park Convention Center! The energy here is amazing, with so many wonderful vendors showcasing unique gifts, and there’s no better time to support local and small businesses for the holidays. Seeing everyone’s excitement as they find gifts for loved ones is a beautiful reminder of how the holiday spirit brings us together. There’s just something heartwarming about shopping, browsing, and laughing with friends and family under the festive lights.

But with all this holiday cheer, it’s easy to overlook Thanksgiving, the day we pause to appreciate what we have. As you plan your menus and table settings, here’s a simple, heartfelt craft to enjoy with the kids, helping them understand gratitude in a way that’s meaningful (and fun!). This “Grateful Turkey” is easy to make, and you might even get a laugh or two as you hear what your kiddos are thankful for.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A paper plate

  • Different colors of construction paper

  • Scissors

  • A glue stick

  • Markers

Instructions:

  1. Draw eyes on the paper plate and add an orange triangle for a beak right below the eyes.

  2. Cut out “feathers” from the construction paper in various colors.

  3. Ask your child what they’re thankful for (you might need to explain it, depending on their age). Write down each answer on a feather.

  4. Glue the feathers around the plate, forming a colorful, thankful turkey!

Put the turkey somewhere visible, like the fridge or a shelf, to remind everyone what they’re grateful for as the holiday season picks up speed. If you make a grateful turkey, tag me in your post—I’d love to see what your kiddos come up with! Let’s make sure Thanksgiving doesn’t get skipped over as we launch into the season of giving.

Have a wonderful weekend, don’t forget to swing by the Holiday Boutique if you’re nearby, and, as always, happy reading.
