A Spring Break Staycation
My husband’s family visited last week. The older I get the more I appreciate quality time with family. To give some context, Ella asked for one person to be at her birthday party in April—her 14-year-old cousin who lives 8 hours away. Although it would have been amazing to surprise her at her party, we were able to have the whole family for multiple days instead. I think we packed a lot of fun into a long weekend and I thought it would be fun to share with you in case you are looking for family fun KC entertainment.
We started the weekend off with a trip to Parkville. We ate at Stone Canyon Pizza and then walked by the river and the kids played at the park. That night was “cousin night.” The kids played, and the parents went to the Sporting KC game. Anytime we can take anyone visiting to a game we do because the atmosphere is infectious. Even if you aren’t a soccer fan—the energy is electric and so much fun. We went on other little adventures and played an epic girls’ vs. boys’ soccer game in the backyard. Even our dog, Buster, got into it. We ended the weekend with a trip to The Rabbit Hole Museum in North Kansas City. It’s a masterpiece of life-size art combined with classic children’s literature. You start by walking down the stairs through the “rabbit hole.” Along the way, there are lines from the book enveloping you as you make your way through to the other side. On the other side, you will find Madeline balancing on the wall and other classic book characters surrounding you. I will admit that my sister-in-law and I felt a little dumb for not knowing all the books highlighted in the exhibits, but don’t worry there is a book list online if you want to read the books with your kids before you go.
I’ve mentioned previously how much I love Shel Silverstein, especially Where the Sidewalk Ends. This was the section I was most looking forward to. My childhood dreams were brought to life. I can’t imagine how incredible I would have thought this place was as a child. Your loved pages brought to life…I’m assuming that’s why the Goodnight Moon room seemed the most magical to my kids. With a larger-than-life bed, “crackling” fire, and doll house to crawl into, what’s not to love? They are still constructing more exhibits. So, I would wait for those, but if you or your children like books as much as we do—it’s a must-see. I had an unfortunate experience at the end of our time there, so I was hesitant to give such rave reviews, but if I remove my feelings from the equation—my kids loved it. I hope yours do too. It’s a true gem to have in Kansas City. The ability to use art and play to introduce a child to the joys of reading is an incredible thing.
We ended their visit with a birthday poster board with cards glued to it that Ella got to open throughout the day. Each envelope had a card with a different activity on it. Everything from an “Ella’s Choice” card to “Play with Barbies.” It was awesome to see how excited she got with each new activity. She loved feeling so special, and we all loved the extra quality family time. I hope you all have a beautiful spring break and Easter weekend. Focus on what you have to be grateful for.
