I thought it might be fun to talk about my creative process just a little bit. How do I get inspired to write my next story? Inspiration varies from author to author, person to person. I find that I will get inspired by anything from a conversation I have with my son or more recently when I am rocking my baby girl before bed. The imagination runs wild when you are sitting in a dark, quiet room before bed!

I might start to think about an article I read about Jupiter and that takes me down a path wondering what Tuck and T-Rex might think about going to outer space…then the adventure begins, one comet leading to the next planet and before you know it, I have more ideas than I know what to do with! Or maybe my family and I visit the pumpkin patch and I get inspired by all the kids picking out their pumpkins. I start envisioning carving the pumpkins or painting them and how much fun the whole month of October is—what else do we love to do before Halloween? Then I need to hurry and write them all down before I lose them! That is the most important part about inspiration, when inspiration hits, start writing. I am also inspired by our library visits and time of the year. For instance, with Tucker starting pre-school this year I swear we borrowed every “starting school” book from the library we could find and then I think, well T-Rex and Tucker definitely need to explore school. I might be talking to a friend and they mention something T-Rex and Tuck should explore next and I go down a rabbit hole of ideas until something sounds good and sticks. Really inspiration is just a bunch of random ideas mixed with trial and error.

I was recently watching a movie about a guy that wrote a memoir and he narrates the ending by saying (and I am paraphrasing) but basically, you don’t have a piece of paper officially declaring you an author/writer like you do as a doctor or lawyer and for that reason you must DECIDE that you are going to be one. That means that any of us can be writers…we just need to start writing! So, what are you waiting for? Let this be the blog post that inspires you to write your own story! While you are writing, don’t forget to read the latest adventure T-Rex and Tuck Explore the Zoo and be on the lookout for T-Rex and Tuck Explore Outer Space (coming soon), maybe it will be the inspiration you were looking for.
